Week Two Blogs
Compare your view of life when you first began college with you view of life now.
When I entered college initially I felt free and independent. I remember it was the first time I felt good about making my own decisions because my parents were not there to challenge them. At the same time I felt as though I wanted to make do something good with my life not something bad so I was compelled to make good decisions. I was very selective about my friends, where I spent my time, and if I would be involved in activities. It was all exciting, yet as I look at my life now I have a different perspective.
My life displays differences in all areas. I am much more carefree. I am willing to give people a chance before making a decision about there character. I am more willing to take chances, though I still struggle with the consequences. I love to enjoy the moment, so I may have a movie marathon for a whole day, or take off a day off work just to lie around. Now my life feels much more at ease than it did before and I feel happier as a person.
Does your family play a role in encouraging you to succeed in school? How does that encouragement or lack of encouragement affect you motivation?
When I was growing up education was a big priority. I remember always wanting to finish my homework before I arrived home from school so that I could watch television. I was motivated to perform well at school because I was constantly rewarded by my parents. They used things such as verbal and physical praise and affection as positive reinforcement. If I performed well in school they were always willing to take me skating, shopping, or to hang out with my friends. Due to my parents constant rewards I have always been focused on my education and my educational achievements have always brought me satisfaction. As a matter of fact my education is a part of my identity.
Think of the last time you had a moral dilemma. What caused the dilemma? How did you handle it?
Everyday people have to make decisions. Some decisions are more difficult than others. As a part of my internship I assist clients with applying for employment. At times this requires me to travel with client to different businesses to fill out applications. I may also have to assist client with filling out applications. Once, when helping a client complete an application she had to make a decision about a question requesting the grades they received in high school. The client admitted that they received very low mark and decided to report fair scores instead. She asked my opinion, and instead of encouraging her to report honest information I went along with her lie. My client did not think anything of but I questioned my decision for the rest of the day.
Keeping in mind the first three points: What are your future goals and how do you want to change them or keep them the same? What do you think will affect your ability to change them or keep them the same?
There are many things I hope to do in my life. I have not been very specific with how I will carry out my plan, but I have a list of things I want to do. Once I finish graduate school I want to get married. I want to buy a house and I want to have my first child. I also want to pursue another Master’s degree, most likely in the human resources field. If I decide to pursuer another degree first then most likely I will wait to have children. I may also wait to buy a house if I go back to school so that I can save money. I cannot see myself doing anything else differently.
What do you think the greatest influences in you life are right now?
How much do you think those influences determine who you will become?
When I think about what motivates me to reach my goal I realize there are many influences in my life. I believe my husband is one of the greatest influences at this point because there is nothing that I will do without considering how he will be affected. Considering my husband I believe that he is a positive influence for me and that he supports me in my personal and professional goals. Another significant influence is my parents. They are a positive and a negative influence in my life. I am confident that they want the best for me and they try their best to be supportive. At the same time they have high and somewhat unrealistic standards. Sometimes they cause me to doubt myself when they do not show me support because they do not believe in what I am doing.

Evasive language
I have found that when I am about to have a conflict with someone and I know that they are going to get mad at me I will twist my language. If something I say is perceived to be offensive then I may use more acceptable statements the next time I am speaking. Also, If I do something that offends someone then I will try to say something to improve the situation. Often times indirect, partially true, language is used to help calm someone down and prevent damage to a relationship.
A typical situation that involves indirect language is when a teacher tells a student they are disappointed in them because they are late. The student may tell the teacher there was a very bad accident and this caused them to be late, but in reality they did not budget their time well, causing him or her to be late. Evasive language is used hear to help the teacher feel the class is still important to the student and that the student is responsible. Another example of evasive language is when a wife tells her husband she went to grocery store after work to pick up some things but she actually bought some things at the mall.

Who do I most fear
My mother is someone that I have looked up to entire life. She has been very influential and a positive force in my life from the time I was born and I do not know what my life would be like without her. She has been a great teacher, example, motivator, positive influence and displayer of affection. Without her I would not have completed high school, finished college, or be in the process of completing my master’s degree. I would have many struggles in my life without her influence and I am very thankful she has been there.
My mother has been there for most significant experiences in my life. Most of all she has been open-minded, non-judgmental, and optimistic. Spirituality is the most significant characteristic my mother possesses and I believe that it is what has driven her in her approach and given her all the energy she has had to help me in my life.

Who is my role model and why?

A Word I Consider Negative
One word I consider very negative is heifer. The Random House Dictionary, 2009, defines the word “heifer” as “a young cow over one year old that has not produced a calf.” I am offended by this word because when I was a child this is how my aunt would refer to me. That may sound funny, but for me being called out of my name is very offensive. I was taught that when you care for someone you treat them with respect and a part of respect is calling someone by their name or the name they prefer. As a result of constantly being called by this name, I constantly felt feelings of shame, guilt, and disappointment within myself.
The word heifer itself does not have a negative meaning. I believe that the way in which it was you, to refer to me, and the attitude with which it was used was most offending. In my families culture calling someone a heifer was a way to show authority and to keep a child in submission. I was also used to show someone that you have a problem with them. When my aunt was calling me this name I was greatly intimidated by her. As a child I rarely wanted to interact with my aunt and I developed feeling of anger and disgust for her. Now if someone calls me a heifer it strikes a nerve and sometimes feelings of shame will come up.

Introduction of Karis the writer
I am a passionate writer. I find that I am much better at saying how I feel on paper. I feel as though there is no one to critisize how I am feeling and I do not have to impress anyone. Writing is also the way I sort my thoughts out. When I speak I process things out loud and sometimes that can be annoying to others, so when I write I am able to feel comfortable with this expression.
My feelings are very strong and I find it hard to always relay all of my feelings to others because I cause others to feel overwhelmed or upset. When I write my feelings down, I find it easy to express these strong feelings and I feel they are safe on the piece of paper. When I see my feelings on paper I am also able to see the impact of such strong emotion. When I write about strong emotion and I re-read the passage I am able to see how overbearing I can be and that I may need to control myself more.
